RNA plan ‘virtual parade’ on VE Day 75

The RNA is planning to hold a ‘virtual parade’ on VE Day 75 to mark the anniversary of the end of the conflict in Europe.

S/M Ken Satterthwaite, the standard bearer at Aylesbury branch in No 6 Area, contacted Central Office to say that he will be parading the branch standard in his front garden during the two-minute silence this Friday, 8 May.

He also invited his fellow standard bearers in the RNA and other Naval veterans organisations to join him to create a nationwide RNA ‘virtual parade’.

Ken said he thought it would be a fitting tribute, as there can be no national or local gatherings to mark the occasion because of social distancing rules, to play his part by parading the Aylesbury standard.

RNA General Secretary S/M Bill Oliphant has passed on the invitation via branch secretaries, inviting standard bearers to take part where possible, and if possible filming or getting photographs of the ‘virtual parade’ for the record – Central Office would like to see some examples please (email them to [email protected]).

S/M Ken is putting a note through the doors of his neighbours telling them of his intention to parade at 1100 on Friday, and asking them to join him – at a suitable distance – to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War 2, to mark Europe’s hard-won freedom from tyranny that we still enjoy today, and also to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives to the coronavirus that has had such a far-reaching effect on our lives this year.
